The accuracy of fluoride measurement in water and its implications for water fluoridation

چکیده

The accurate measurement of the fluoride concentration in water is an essential prerequisite to stay within the allowable dosing tolerances required by the South African water fluoridation legislation. In the absence of reliable error estimates for fluoride measurement in natural water samples, a study was conducted utilising data from interlaboratory comparison studies conducted by the CSIR, the SABS and MEDUNSA. This study shows that: • natural samples are more difficult to measure than synthetic samples; • technology advances over the last 25 years did not reduce the measurement error significantly; • all analytical methods suffer to some extent when natural samples are analysed; and • the measurement error will have to be appreciably reduced if the legal requirements of the pending water fluoridation are to be met.

Measurement of Fluoride Concentration in Semnan Drinking Water Distribution

Background: The existence of fluoride ion in potable water has distinctive effects on human health. Fluoride is attracted by positively charged calcium in teeth and bones due to its strong electro-negativity which results in dental, skeletal, and non-skeletal forms of xuorosis and associated health complaints in children as well as adults. Methods: Water samples from groundwater used for dri...

Evaluation of Ground Water Fluoride Concentration in Hamadan Province West of IRAN(2012)

Background and purpose: Fluoride is one of the drinking water contaminants regulated by EPA. This ion, in low doses in the mouth reduces tooth decay without health risk and at much higher doses causes health complications and can be toxic. The major sources of exposure to fluoride are drinking water, food, dental products, and pesticides. The biggest contributor to exposure for most people in I...

Water fluoridation and oral health.

UNLABELLED Water fluoridation, is the controlled addition of fluoride to the water supply, with the aim of reducing the prevalence of dental caries. Current estimates suggest that approximately 370 million people in 27 countries consume fluoridated water, with an additional 50 million consuming water in which fluoride is naturally occurring. A pre-eruptive effect of fluoride exists in reducing ...

Potential fluoride toxicity from oral medicaments: A review

The beneficial effects of fluoride on human oral health are well studied. There are numerous studies demonstrating that a small amount of fluoride delivered to the oral cavity decreases the prevalence of dental decay and results in stronger teeth and bones. However, ingestion of fluoride more than the recommended limit leads to toxicity and adverse effects. In order to update our understanding ...
